I had an interesting discussion with some 6th graders the other day. I made the observation that I rarely see anyone checkout from our historical fiction section. I wondered why? Their feedback was interesting and pretty honest. They talked about a lack of interest in the topics-- as one explained it, they were not curious about things that had already happened, they were curious about the future. Another student talked about the unpredictability of fantasy books, which is so appealing as opposed to what is perceived about historical fiction-- its too easy to know what will happen.
Well- challenge accepted. I went over and grabbed two books from this section and shared their "book blurbs." I thought they both sounded pretty good. I plan to work on how I book talk from this section. I also plan to grab a book from this area for my weekend read. I hope I find something good!
